I have the best job in the world! Being a provider of creative services, I get to work in all kinds of situations with all sorts of people, doing all kinds of creative things. This particular day was no exception. Tanya Danielle and I are old friends and have been shooting together on a monthly basis for over 10 years now.
Tanya has a private client that asked for a set of photos of her in a red dress with film noir style lighting. I’m not sure what the point of the red dress was considering the photos were going to be delivered in black and white.
After moving all the furniture in my house out of the way, I headed down to my local camera shop to pick up a roll of black seamless paper. Even though I have a lot of room in my house, a 9ft roll of seamless takes up a hell of a lot of space. The lighting set up was not actual film noir style lighting in its basic nature, but I knew once the photos were made black and white it would be close enough. I used a large octabox as the key light and another strobe with a 20 degree grid as a back light.
The shoot only took 30 or 40 minutes total, just long enough for my girlfriend to come home from work and find a half naked woman in our living room. Luckily, my girlfriend is never really all that surprised by what she sees when she walks in the door.
This was another scenario in which the old saying is true, “You only have to sell what you see” when it comes to photography. Even though we were jammed into a small shooting area, it appears that Tanya is standing in an endless black space.
If you have a camera, turn it on and shoot. Take care.
